Day 5 - Margherita

Day 5 - Margherita

I went out to the local Farmers Markets this morning and that is where I met Margherita. Like a bowerbird I was attracted to her lovely bright garments fluttering in the early morning light. We got talking and I came away with a sweet blouse, a dress on order and the delight that comes from meeting someone new and having a really interesting conversation.

I loved one of the dresses hanging up but on trying it for size found it a little bit too snug around the hips - no problem Margherita takes orders, custom fits and posts it out.  How cool is it too have someone custom make a garment for you? Very cool and I haven't had that experience since my own Mum used to throw a tape measure around me and a few hours later emerge with something that fit like a glove and was made out of the material and in the pattern that I chose. I love handmade, artisan crafts and it was so nice to browse amongst so many. There is a lot of very talented, very unique individuals both from this town and visiting it.

Anyway on to Margherita:
When asked what it was she wanted to be when she was a child, Margherita said that like her father, she had wanted to be a clothing designer and tailor.  She studied with him all her childhood and learnt the skills well. Having her own trade however was not to happen until much later in her life - as in now actually.

Instead she travelled the world, had a family and ended up with a career in Education Queensland. It was not until much later that she made the leap of faith and started her own business designing and making her own lovely clothes - it came as no surprise to me to find out her gorgeous clothes sell well and she now has a thriving enterprise on her hands and people from all over the country wearing her clothes which she sells on the internet and at the markets to which she travels.
